“So long as you write what you wish to write, that is all that matters; and whether it matters for ages or only for hours, nobody can say.”

A Room of One's Own is an extended essay by Virginia Woolf, based on two lectures she delivered in October 1928 at two women's colleges, Newnham College and Girton College, of the University of Cambridge. The essay discusses a variety of topics, particularly focusing on women's lack of free self-expression. "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction". The essay asserts that intellectual freedom depends in some part on material considerations, specifically economic independence and private space. Woolf highlights how, historically, women were restricted by poverty and patriarchal structures that denied them education and creative time. Woolf encourages women to break from male-dominated traditions, fostering their own literary voice to build upon the legacy of predecessors like Jane Austen. Ultimately, it is a call for women to achieve both independence and creative expression. We invite you to join us for this three-evening exploration of this foundational work.
