Over a period of a decade, G. W. F Hegel gave a series of lectures to his students at the University of Berlin.  Of these, "The  lectures of 1827” were recorded by several of his best students who took verbatim notes (including his son, Karl). In them, he explains his view that the mysteries of the faith are rational truths that can be understood by means of philosophy.

As a lecturer in the classroom, Hegel was forced to be clear, use examples, and repeat himself. These lectures are considered more accessible than his formal works and, so, more popular. They are considered to represent his clearest and most refined thought, famous because they represent a mature synthesis of his ideas on the philosophy of religion.

The 1827 lectures were only fully organized and published in a three-volume series between 1984 and 1987. The 1988 abridgment we will read was designed to provide the 1827 lectures as a standalone, “accessible” text for students.

Online seminars in this series will take place on Wednesday evenings, 5:30-7:00PM Pacific Time. Attendees can use the online PDF or purchase the text tehmselves. Sessions will be facilitated by Clare McGrath-Merkle. Groups will be limited to 16 participants and no prior knowledge is required. Teachers will be offered 2 CEU credits for participating. This eight-week series is $425. Community of Lifelong Learner subscribers receive a discount of $25 through a refund. Payment options are available.
